Welcome to the RHCSD Art Department Site
Welcome to the Red Hook Central School District’s K-12 Art Department website
Our teacher websites include information about Red Hook’s art courses, explanations of NYS and Common Core standards related to the visual arts, and examples of student work.
From kindergarten through 12th grade, our art lessons are designed to foster each child’s unique creativity while building upon their previous mastery of art-making skills and concepts. Typically, our projects become more complex and the work increasingly independent as students gain experience and are able to manage a wider and deeper range of creative challenges.
Red Hook High School is one of a limited number of NYS high schools that offers International Baccalaureate (IB) courses to its students. Each IB subject may be completed as one component of the IB Diploma, or as a separate high-level course potentially earning college credit. IB Art is a rigorous, two-year program (taken in 11th and 12th grades) in which students make personally relevant artworks supported by written work demonstrating the development of their creative ideas and growing knowledge of the arts of varied cultures and time periods. In addition to our Studio One Art foundation course, Red Hook High School also offers a range of art electives including Studio Two Art, Ceramics, Drawing and Painting, Graphic Design, 3D Design/Sculpture and Advanced Art (for non-IB students interested in completing a portfolio of original work).
We’re proud that our K-12 visual arts curriculum exceeds the NYS Standards and nurtures the development of students’ critical thinking, creative problem-solving skills and visual literacy. Our shared goal is for our students to experience many creative successes over the years and develop a deep and lasting understanding and appreciation of art that will enrich their lives and help them in their future work (whatever that may be). As we continue to develop our program to reflect shifts in educational goals and contemporary art practices, we remain steadfastly committed to fostering each student’s enjoyment of art.
We thank the Red Hook Central School District community for its continued support of art education! Please access information about specific art classes by visiting each teacher’s individual site (see list below). We value your feedback, so please don’t hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns.
