NEW YORK STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STANDARDS

NEW YORK STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STANDARD #1:
    Students will be able to use a language other than English for communication.

NEW YORK STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STANDARD #2:
    Students will develop cross-cultural skills and understandings

Students will perform tasks related to a meaningful context, within the four communication skills/strategies of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

  • #1: Use and expand vocabulary and structures to create appropriate and  authentic speech, with spiraling from Levels One through Four
  • #2:  Learn cultural information, conventions and skills, to acquire knowledge and understanding of the arts, economy, heritage, and social institutions of other countries.

The work that is done in the foreign language classrooms in the Red Hook Central School District not only includes, but surpasses the New York State Standards.  The national standards of Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities are also used when planning lessons and activities.

NATIONAL STANDARDS

COMMUNICATION:

  • Standard 1.1:  Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics.
  • Standard 1.3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.

CULTURES:

  • Standard 1.1:  Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practice and perspectives of the cultures studied.
  • Standard 2.2:  Students demonstrate and understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the cultures studied

CONNECTIONS:

  • Standard 3.1:  Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines
  • Standard 3.2:  Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the target language and the target language speaking countries.

COMPARISONS:

  • Standard 4.1:  Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the target language to their own languages.
  • Standard 4.2:  Students demonstrate understand of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own.

COMMUNITIES:

  • Standard 5.1:  Students use the target language both within and beyond the school setting.
  • Standard 5.2:  Students show evidence of becoming lifelong learners by using the target language for personal enjoyment and enrichment.

LEARNING OUTCOMES BASED ON NATIONAL STANDARDS

LEVEL ONE:
COMMUNICATION:

  • Standard 1.1:  Students will be able to greet, introduce themselves and express opinions and feelings on an elementary level.
  • Standard 1.2:  Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topic (recognize and say alphabet, read a street sign, a note or an advertisement)
  • Standard 1.3:  Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics (be able to write a note, prescripted or original dialogs, videotape skits).

CULTURES:

  • Standard 2.1:  Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practice and perspectives of the cultures studied  (be able to use the concepts of the formal and
    familiar "you").
  • Standard 2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the cultures studied (cut out labels, read a map).

CONNECTIONS:

  • Standard 3.1:  Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines such as history through other languages (deal with the issue of immigration and its impact in our culture, influence on local history).
  • Standard 3.2:  Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through Foreign Language and  the French/German/Spanish speaking world.
    (newspaper and technology).

COMPARISONS:

  • Standard 4.1:  Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the second language and their own language (identify cognates, recognize the significance of word order).
  • Standard 4.2:  Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own (kilos, sizes, monetary units, and architectural design and terminology).

COMMUNITIES:

  • Standard 5.1:  Students use Foreign Language both within and beyond the school setting (conduct interviews, eat at restaurants, listen to or view Foreign Language broadcasts, make local excursions).
  • Standard 5.2:  Students show evidence of becoming lifelong learners by using their second language for personal enjoyment and enrichment (use of community resources for integration through field trips to dance and /or musical performances).

LEVEL TWO:
COMMUNICATION:

  • Standard 1.1: Students will be able to greet, introduce themselves and express opinions and feelings on an intermediate level; pronounce at a level close to what a native speaker could comprehend.
  • Standard 1.2: Students will be able to read, write, and speak verbs in all three basic tenses.
  • Standard 1.3: Students will be able to write friendly letters and read short narratives.

CULTURES:

  • Standard 2.1:Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practice and perspectives of the cultures studied (study the school system of the target culture, read an authentic report cards, create a school schedule according to an authentic mode.).
  • Standard 2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the cultures studied (replicate an authentic meal).  

CONNECTIONS:

  • Standard 3.1:  Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines such as art and music through a second language (study the contributions of foreign artists and musicians from a global perspective).
  • Standard 3.2:  Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through Foreign Language and  the French/German/Spanish speaking world.
    (newspaper and technology i.e. implementation of an e-mail friendship).

COMPARISONS:

  • Standard 4.1:  Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the second language and their own language (understanding and comparing idiomatic expressions, sayings and proverbs).
  • Standard 4.2:  Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own (acquiring a more in depth understanding of the calendar, holidays and celebrations).

COMMUNITIES:

  • Standard 5.1:  Students use Foreign Language both within and beyond the school setting (interacting with students involved in language programs in other institutions, i.e. plays, immersion programs).
  • Standard 5.2:  Students show evidence of becoming lifelong learners by using their second language for personal enjoyment and enrichment (use community resources for integration through field trips to films, plays and museum exhibits).

LEVEL THREE:
COMMUNICATION:

  • Standard 1.1:  Students will be able to express opinions and feelings on a more advanced level.
  • Standard 1.2:  Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a more advanced level (recognizing and comprehending the essence of the subjunctive mood, analyzing short stories).
  • Standard 1.3:  Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a more advanced level (communicating via mail, e-mail, audio or video tape, and
    spontaneous dialoging; demonstrating proficiency through guided role-play).

CULTURES:

  • Standard 2.1:  Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practice and perspectives of the cultures studied  (analyzing and discussing in the target language, cultural values, mores, and laws).
  • Standard 2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding about parallel teenage culture and perspectives related to them (comparing the products and practices of two teenage cultures i.e. exchange of "artifacts box").

CONNECTIONS:

  • Standard 3.1:  Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines such as, literature and the fine arts (analyze poetry and create an original poem, interpret foreign song lyrics, learn and present songs in the target language).
  • Standard 3.2:  Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through Foreign Language and  the French/German/Spanish speaking world.
    (arranging for guest speakers, participating in student exchanges, soliciting information
    from consulates, travel bureaus, and cultural centers).
     

COMPARISONS:

  • Standard 4.1:  Students will demonstrate a familiarity with colloquial expressions, slang, and the vernacular.
  • Standard 4.2:  Students demonstrate a sense of historical perspective by learning about the time periods in which various authors wrote and the culture prevalent at that time, and then comparing this with their own culture.

COMMUNITIES:

  • Standard 5.1:  Students use Foreign Language both within and beyond the school setting (participating in immersion programs, conducting surveys, caroling, organizing an international dinner for the community, interacting through an International Club).
  • Standard 5.2:  Students show evidence of becoming lifelong learners by using their second language for personal enjoyment and enrichment (students may share their experiences with foreign speakers).

LEVEL FOUR:
COMMUNICATION:

  • Standard 1.1:  Students will develop higher level thinking and communicative skills such as persuasion, collaboration, evaluation,, generalization, interpretation, and extrapolation.
  • Standard 1.2:  Students will be able to effectively use literature (analyze, discuss and compare). Students will also be able to effectively use the mass media (newspapers, magazines, television, the Internet and CD Rom).
  • Standard 1.3: Students will be able to express opinions and feelings in a debate format.  Topical vocabulary and information should be researched and documented in written form.
    Students will create research based oral presentations on a variety of topics such as
    historical events, cultural highlights and current events.  Students will brainstorm, plan and
    organize an event such as a play, puppet show or variety show.

CULTURES:

  • Standard 2.1:  Students will be able to apply a knowledge and appreciation of cultural differences and history, geography, arts and current events of the target country in all written and oral work.
  • Standard 2.2:  Students will actively participate in cultural events

CONNECTIONS:

  • Standard 3.1:  Students will develop an understanding of political events and developments in the target country, and their impact on past and present political situations in the world.
  • Standard 3.2:  Students will read and analyze current periodicals and be able to compare perspectives.

COMPARISONS:

  • Standard 4.1:  Students will be able to identify different literary styles which are culture based.
  • Standard 4.2:  Students will be able to read and compare classical literature with contemporary writing.

COMMUNITIES:

  • Standard 5.1:  Students will be able to communicate in the target language via the Internet about current global events.
  • Standard 5.2:  Students will be adequately prepared to choose whether or not to take an achievement test, or a placement exam for college.
