Students explore coding, AI in STEAM lab

Posted Date: 01/08/26 (12:51 PM)

During Computer Science Education Week in December, Mill Road Elementary’s grades 3–5 STEAM students explored the world of coding and AI.
Third grade students learned coding unplugged by creating step-by-step commands (up, down, left, right, jump, slide) to help a character travel from start to finish. They practiced building clear sequences, just like programmers do.
Fourth and fifth grade students took their coding skills to the next level using a digital coding program that introduced real STEAM careers in music, animation and technology. Students combined these skills to create an AI-assisted coded dance party, blending creativity with computer science.
Along the way, our future programmers learned key vocabulary such as programmer, code, command, sequence and unplugged. They discovered how coding is used in the real world every day.
