SCHOLARSHIPS

Red Hook has been incredibly fortunate to receive thousands of dollars each year for students to travel with CIEE.

Our students have the exciting opportunity to apply for scholarships through the CIEE High School Summer Abroad program. These scholarships make it possible for students to immerse themselves in global cultures, develop language skills, and gain valuable academic and life experiences—all during the summer. With generous need-based and merit-based funding available, CIEE helps make study abroad more accessible than ever.

Studying abroad in Spain was the experience of a lifetime. Not only did I learn to be more comfortable with a language, but I also learned so much about the culture with being so immersed in it. On top of learning new things, you get to see so many unique locations and try such a diverse array of activities which you can’t experience anywhere else. And all along the way you’re constantly building new relationships with those around you, gaining friends you could have for a long time to come. Overall, it was an experience like no other. You come back with a new perspective, not having only grown a lot just intellectually but also possibly quite a bit internally. It’s a great opportunity to go outside of your comfort zone and get out there in the world and see what else there is beyond what you’re used to.

My time in Australia was incredible! The people I met, the activities and just living in a new country/city made it an experience to remember forever. My program in specific was very activity and field work based which meant almost everyday I was out in Sydney and not in an actual classroom which is one thing I loved about my program. Another thing that I loved about my program was the activities! Some examples of activities we did are free roaming kangaroo and wildlife park, koala sanctuary, and tour of the Sydney Opera house. A final thing that made my trip so wonderful was the living arrangements! For my program in specific we had houses with 12 other students on the program with one program leader living in them. This let us as students have a lot of independence while also creating such good memories. I highly recommend doing a CIEE program to other students, it is a trip to remember forever!

I made some truly amazing memories while in Spain. I met some great people had incredible roommates that I am still in touch with, which is a unique opportunity that CIEE offers when participating in a program. The Spanish class I took was also an enlightening experience. I got to learn about and be immersed in a new culture, which helped me understand people on a much deeper level while also respecting and recognizing their backgrounds. The excursions also provided me with various experiences that I would never have thought of participating in before, such as canoeing in El Río Guadalquivir or cooking paella and gazpacho. My time in Spain allowed me to grow as a person and become more independent, which I believe is very valuable. The sites I visited were also some of the most beautiful places I have ever been to; this allowed me to appreciate the beauty in nature and architecture, broadening my interests and expanding my general knowledge of the culture and history of Spain.
